Tengile MalaMala Collection

The Tengile MalaMala Collection is an owner-led, community-partnered safari collection in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, part of Greater Kruger in South Africa. It brings together Tengile Game Reserve, which includes Tengile River Lodge and Kirkman’s Kamp, as well as the iconic MalaMala Game Reserve’s lodges and camps. This will include the future Khensani River Lodge, positioned on MalaMala’s Charleston area along the Sand River, one of the best-known wildlife corridors in Greater Kruger. The collection combines contemporary design, classic safari heritage and a strong focus on conservation and community benefit.

There are currently five operating lodges and camps within the Tengile MalaMala Collection. All are situated along 20km of river frontage across MalaMala Private Game Reserve and Tengile Game Reserve, which forms part of the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger region. These properties are Tengile River Lodge, Rattray’s, Kirkman’s Kamp, MalaMala Camp and Sable Camp. A sixth property, Khensani River Lodge, is scheduled to open in December 2026 as a luxury lodge.

The collection spans the MalaMala and Tengile game reserves, which together form one of the largest private tracts within the Greater Kruger ecosystem. The land has an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park and lies in a water-rich, predator-dense corridor that is widely recognised for outstanding game viewing.

The river, the story, and what makes this area different

All properties are situated along 20km of river frontage across MalaMala Private Game Reserve and Tengile Game Reserve, which forms part of the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger region.

The collection combines contemporary design, classic safari heritage and a strong focus on conservation and community benefit.

MalaMala continues to offer the classic elements for which it is so well known and revered in the Greater Kruger area: unparalleled game density, exceptional riverfront game viewing, and a rich safari heritage. Under the Tengile MalaMala Collection, there will also be a renewed focus on elevated cuisine, service, and the overall camp and lodge experience.

The brand rests on three main pillars: exceptional wildlife and habitat care, genuine partnership with local communities, and a style of quiet, thoughtful luxury. A guiding principle is respect for nature and the balance between people, wildlife and land, which shapes how we build, operate and host. We value space, time and the smaller details over display.

At Tengile MalaMala, luxury means time, exclusivity and vast expanse. Guests explore privately through some of South Africa’s most exceptional game-viewing areas, complimented by a rich heritage, thoughtfully designed lodges and camps, and hospitality that is both genuine and attentive.

Choosing the right lodge or camp

Tengile River Lodge is a contemporary, design-focused safari lodge in Sabi Sand with nine large suites and private plunge pools overlooking the Sand River. Rattray’s offers eight villa style suites with a strong sense of MalaMala history and seclusion. MalaMala Camp and Sable Camp are more classic, story-rich safari camps on the river, while Kirkman’s Kamp is a 1920’s homestead style lodge. Our latest project, to be launched as Khensani River Lodge will introduce an ultra private villa concept ideal for families and high net worth groups. Visit our accommodation

Kirkman’s Kamp and MalaMala Camp can take children of all ages. Rattray’s is great for intimate exclusive use groups with children over 16 years. Sable Camp and future Khensani River Lodge work very well for multi-generational or friends and family groups seeking semi-exclusive or wholly exclusive use. Tengile’s Family Suite and the family cottage at Kirkman’s are ideal for smaller family parties.

Tengile River Lodge has nine suites, including one family suite. Rattray’s has eight suites. MalaMala Camp includes ten luxury suites, eight luxury rooms and one single room. Design and sense of place

Tengile River Lodge combines clean, contemporary architecture with warm, tactile safari textures. Suites are raised in the riverine forest with wraparound glass, generous decks and private pools, all oriented to the Sand River. The palette is calm and earth toned, creating an atmosphere of quiet, modern luxury in the Greater Kruger bush. Kirkman’s intimacy and quiet carries the spirit of the original lodge with magnificent artifacts and objects, a lounge and Paul’s Bar, where guests love to gather and share their stories. MalaMala has a very authentic bush experience in its aesthetic, rich dark tones, and a large open interior lounge space with fireplace and an expansive deck where guests dine.

Rattray’s pays homage to the early MalaMala era through grand villas, antiques and curated art that recall the property’s history on the Sand River. MalaMala Camp and Sable Camp lean into classic safari architecture, historic photographs, maps and memorabilia, with decks and bomas positioned for uninterrupted views over the river and floodplains.

For guests who value design, it is worth noting that Tengile and the new work on Khensani River Lodge both have been co-created with leading interior designer Michelle Throssell. The Saad family, are closely involved in interiors, which gives the lodges and camps a personal, residential feeling rather than a standard hotel look.

Interiors across the collection use hand-crafted furniture, textiles and art that take inspiration from Shangaan culture, local landscapes and the long history of safaris in Greater Kruger. Artwork and objects are chosen to tell stories about the river, wildlife, music and community, so that spaces feel rooted in place rather than generically decorated.

Conservation, wildlife, and responsible tourism

The core conservation priorities are rhino protection, monitoring of large predators such as leopard and African wild dog, and careful habitat management on the MalaMala and Tengile reserves. Because the land forms part of the Greater Kruger system, there is a strong emphasis on maintaining natural processes and biodiversity so that wildlife can move freely between Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park.

Rhino protection is a key focus area across the Tengile MalaMala Collection. Practical measures include de-horning and tagging where appropriate, regular patrols, aerial support and close cooperation with regional authorities. These efforts are partly funded through guest levies and donations and are designed to balance security measures with animal welfare. There is a rhino de-horning program which happens twice a year.

The reserves work with independent conservation organisations, including partners such as Panthera, to strengthen research and monitoring. These collaborations make use of tools like camera traps and shared sightings databases to build an accurate picture of predator populations and movements, and to inform management decisions within the Greater Kruger context.

Large predators are monitored through daily sightings logs, dedicated research projects and periodic aerial surveys, with special attention given to threatened species such as African wild dogs and cheetah. Management is as non-intrusive as possible, with intervention reserved for cases linked to human caused injuries or specific conservation needs.

Each year, the reserves contribute data such as aerial game counts, vegetation and erosion monitoring, and species-specific studies, for example on Southern Ground Hornbills. This information feeds into decisions around fire management, bush thinning, road placement and other key conservation activities, and in some cases is shared with broader Greater Kruger research initiatives.

The combined land of Tengile Game Reserve and MalaMala Game Reserve has the lowest vehicle to land ratio in the Sabi Sand area, and the lowest number of beds versus land. Vehicle movements are carefully managed, and guiding standards are designed to reduce pressure on wildlife and sensitive habitats while still delivering exceptional sightings.

Vehicle numbers at sightings are controlled, typically allowing a maximum of three vehicles at a time, with rotation when needed. Guides communicate via discreet headsets, and off roading is permitted only when conditions and habitat allow. Sensitive areas, such as riverbanks in wet months, are treated with particular care.

Guides put the welfare of animals first, which means maintaining respectful distances, not blocking movement and managing the use of spotlights at night. Guests are encouraged to prioritise natural behaviour over staged images. This approach supports both good ethics and better long term photo opportunities on a Kruger area safari.

In general, the reserves follow a non-intervention policy, allowing natural processes to play out without interference. Intervention is considered only in cases linked to human activity, such as snaring, or in specific situations involving endangered species where conservation authorities recommend action.

Lodges in the Tengile MalaMala Collection are moving steadily toward more sustainable operations through increased use of solar power, careful water management and reduced single use plastics. Practical steps range from energy efficient appliances and lighting to responsible laundry practices and improved waste separation and disposal.

Packing

Pack for early morning and evening game drives that can feel cool, and warmer temperatures in the middle of the day.

Light, breathable layers are easiest, with a warmer outer layer for early starts and evenings.

Seasons

The experience shifts through the year as temperature, vegetation, and water availability change, which can influence visibility and animal movement.

In cooler months, mornings and evenings can be colder and vegetation tends to be thinner. In warmer months, the bush can be greener and conditions can be hotter.

Media and trade

We can provide a media kit on request, including approved images, brand information and fact sheets.
