For World Female Ranger Week, Geena Wegner shares her journey from nature-loving child to MalaMala ranger, honoring the women who paved the way in guiding.

Since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by the natural world. I have been able to combine this love for all things wild with my passion for people into a career in guiding. In another fortunate turn of events, I am now working as a game ranger at MalaMala. My short time here has been nothing less than exceptional: lions lazing along the banks of the Sand River; brightly-coloured birds soaring across the landscape; fresh tracks every morning enticing you to follow; and truly Madness around every corner.

It has been the greatest privilege to showcase South Africa’s wildlife to guests from all over the world these last few years. I recognize – and deeply appreciate – that I would not have had this incredible opportunity had there not been women willing to do what had never been done before: to be brave enough to break the conventional barriers in the guiding industry.

To the women that paved the way for all of the female guides that came after them: the sincerest thank you from the little girl who wanted to be just like you.
