Fondly referred to as “a place of legends” the camp exudes a laid-back pace that evokes a sense of nostalgia, typical of the ‘pioneer safari’ days. MalaMala Camp is a welcoming home-from-home, where rare photographs, locally-produced wares, old maps and mementos sit comfortably with the works of renowned contemporary wildlife artists.

Eleven suites and eight large rooms styled in rich, earthy tones blend harmoniously into the landscape. Each has unhindered views of the water-rich flood plains beyond the massive trees that provide shade and shelter to a number of birds and mammals.

From the sprawling deck canopied by an enormous Jackal-berry tree, guests have up-close visuals of the passing parade of visitors attracted by the riverine habitat. It’s a good idea to keep your binoculars and camera close at hand when you spend time in this magical spot to capture the element of surprise.

Guest Area

The air-conditioned library is the place to take refuge from the heat of the day and relax with a good book or catch up with current affairs on social media. Guests gather in the airy lounge and “Buffalo Bar” in the evenings, which doubles as a “gallery” of fascinating historic photographs depicting the founders and lifestyle of the early pioneer era, which makes for good talking points and discussion.

Cuisine

With a varied combination of delicious global favourites and Pan-African dishes on offer throughout the day, meals are skilfully paired with a surprising variety of top wines from our cellar.

Delicious dinners are served on the spacious deck, around the fire in the traditional reed “boma’ or the air-conditioned dining-room. Pre game drive tea-time with a variety of freshly baked traditional tarts, cakes and snacks on offer is a firm favourite with guests.

Boutique & Relaxation

Locally made artefacts, jewellery and stylish clothes are found in the Safari boutique. Keep your fitness levels in check with a visit to the small gym facility and massage service if you choose a relaxing pamper.

A short walk down the deck’s stairs takes you to a seductive pool and small gym overlooking the floodplains, so you can watch the unfolding action as you get fit!

This is one of the few safari destinations with a universally accessible suite, to meet the needs of guests with physical challenges. It is designed in accordance with the Disabled People’s Information Service of South Africa, in line with international standards. Game drives in specially equipped Land Rovers enhance the experiences of those requiring assistance.

Info

Useful Information

Guests travelling to the Greater Kruger region are encouraged to consult their physician or travel clinic prior to departure to discuss recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention. While the area is considered low risk, simple precautions such as using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves in the evening are advised. Guests should also travel with any required personal medications and ensure appropriate travel insurance is in place. The lodge team is always available to assist should any medical needs arise during your stay.

The MalaMala Game Reserve and the surrounding Greater Kruger National Park enjoy a warm, inviting climate year-round, making this region an exceptional safari destination in every season. Summer (October – April) brings warm days, often in the high-20s to mid-30s °C, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that refresh the bush and awaken vibrant birdlife, while many animals give birth during this lush, green season.

Winter (May – September) offers crisp mornings and mild, sunlit days, with very little rainfall and more open vegetation, allowing for excellent visibility. Wildlife often gathers around the Sand River and nearby water sources, making game viewing particularly rewarding during the dry winter months.

By Air

Guests can fly from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Skukuza Airport, located within Kruger National Park. From here, a scenic road transfer of approximately one hour brings guests to MalaMala Game Reserve. Alternatively, guests may fly directly from O.R. Tambo International Airport to the MalaMala private airstrip via scheduled shuttle services, with a short transfer through the reserve to the lodge on arrival. Private charter flights can also be arranged directly to MalaMala for a seamless safari arrival.

By Road

MalaMala Game Reserve is approximately a 5–6 hour drive from Johannesburg. The journey follows well-maintained national and regional roads through the scenic Lowveld to the town of Hazyview, before entering the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve via Shaw’s Gate and continuing on to MalaMala.

For further details and personalised arrangements, kindly contact the concierge team.

MalaMala Camp welcomes children of all ages, with specific policies for pricing, accommodation and activities. Youngsters under 5 stay for free, while those aged 6–16 receive a 50% discount when sharing with full-paying adults. While little ones under 5 are not permitted on standard game drives, or to dine in the boma in the evenings, babysitters can be arranged for a nominal fee. Pre-teens are not allowed on bush walks.
