Purpose for our people

The Tengile MalaMala Collection is dedicated to the sustained delivery of long-term, tangible benefits to our local people.

MalaMala Game Reserve Community

A genuine care for our people is the powerful motivating factor that keeps us focused on consistently striving for betterment. MalaMala Game Reserve funds community development through the Mintirho Community Development Trust and the MalaMala Foundation.

They work hand-in-hand with the N’wandlamhari community which, as shareholders, is part-and-parcel of the Tengile MalaMala business. The existing state of the pristine land also holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for local communities. Known for their entrepreneurial spirit and craftsmanship, the Shangaan have historically been skilled traders and artisans.

Overall, the Shangaan embrace a spirited blend of tradition and modernity, maintaining a deep cultural identity while contributing significantly to society.

Inherently connected to the local population from which most of our employees are drawn, we ensure that the community derives significant income from the business, via multiple revenue streams, each applied to different aspects of the community’s social and economic development.

Dividends are used to fund Small, Medium, and Micro-enterprises (SMMEs) and other infrastructure projects, whilst lease fees are distributed to local households by way of a stipend; and the Community Tourism Levy is applied to the education and training of local people in all fields of hospitality and eco-tourism.

This is achieved through partnership between conservation and communities helping one another – the meaning of ‘Pfunanani’. Initiatives include Youth Employment Service (YES), environmental upskilling initiatives, Environmental Affairs’ Environmental Infrastructure and Protection Programme.
